Government figures show inflation pushed consumer costs up by about 13 billion dollars in the first nine months of the year with price gains expected to taper but not vanish. GNP rose to 439 billion in the third quarter from 426 at year start driven mainly by higher prices and spending on food and non durable goods.

Typhoon Mamie churns 520 miles northeast of Guam with 92 mph winds as Lola moves away from Japan. Mamie’s center is forecast 700 miles east of Iwo Jima by Friday while Lola remains 1,000 miles east of Tokyo moving northeast.
A 12 year old girl, daughter of a showgirl, confessed to starting 11 fires in 15 hours at the Hotel Brierfield on West 83rd Street and nearby areas. She was committed to Bellevue Hospital for mental examination. a December hearing was set. The fires caused about 1000 in damage and panic among guests.
Maj. Gen Abdel Hakem Amer returned to Cairo from Moscow aboard a Soviet jet with a reported pledge of 175 million dollars in Russian economic aid for Egypt. The two hour session with President Nasser followed a three week Soviet tour tied to the Bolshevik Revolution anniversary and a Syria link. Soviet-Egyptian communique indicated talks on military questions and a broader economic pact similar to Syria's arrangements.
Connecticut Farm Bureau delegates at Newington reject a state income tax proposal and funding shifts for property tax exemptions. They vote 50 to 29 against urging the Tax Study Commission to study education only tax options and amend a resolution regarding the matter.

Secretary of State Dulles told a Chicago audience that NATO forces would almost certainly strike back on the spot if attacked, without waiting for a war declaration. He noted American troops would be involved due to intermingled NATO forces, and a response could rival Pearl Harbor in scale if an atomic strike occurred.

Rep Mahon charged the United States is behind Russia in developing an IRBM, a claim disputed by Pentagon official Holaday who questioned ICBM progress. The surprise House inquiry heard testimony behind closed doors as Mahon pressed for a bold program to close the gap. Secretary McElroy testified the missile program is in good shape and promised added focus on anti intercontinental missiles.
Hartford, Nov 20 AP A loan interviewer for the Aircraft Federal Credit Union was arrested by the FBI and bound over to U S District court on embezzlement charges totaling about 8000 dollars. Charles W Loomis 36 of Hartford waived a hearing and faces up to five years in prison and a 5000 dollar fine if convicted. The scheme allegedly spanned April 17 to Sept 6 this year. The union counts 33000 Pratt & Whitney employees as members and holds assets exceeding 17 million dollars. Loomis offered bond set at 1500 dollars.
In Woodbury Kentucky residents shopped by helicopter after 14 feet of floodwater isolation. An Army helicopter from Fort Campbell ferried food and medical supplies and picked up mail from Morgantown. Local residents reported no milk or bread but said no one was in danger.
