In a study based on Mississippi fieldwork, Dr N N Puckett of Western Reserve University argues that most southern black superstitions trace to white influence rather than Africa. He notes voodoo as a historical relic and cites quirky recipes and advice, from rain rituals to love charms, as examples of old folk thought waning under rising race pride.
