South Dakota Gov Salaries Stay At Three Thousand
South Dakota voters again keep state official salaries at the 3000 dollar level. Since 1824 the constitution limited the governor to 3000, Supreme Court judges 2400, and other salaries from 1800 downward. Reforms to raise pay have repeatedly failed or been rejected by voters, with past amendments proposing increases and the electors voting them down. The piece notes the governor and attorney general receive fixed annual sums and that the secretary of state and other officials face ongoing debates over salaries.

Helium Aids Deep Sea Divers Says Government
Washington reports the Bureau of Mines finds helium, the gas that inflates airships, can aid deep sea divers by allowing safer, deeper work. It forms a nitrogen-free synthetic atmosphere, reducing the bends and enabling longer dives. The helium system, after animal tests, was used by the Navy to raise the submarine S-51 sunk near Newport, Rhode Island.
