Norwalk voters chose Independent Irving C. Freese to return as mayor in a four contender race. Freese won 19,953 of 24,152 votes, beating Republican Stanley H. Stroffolino and Democrat George R. In Westport on a Wednesday night, Herbert E. Baldwin Sr. narrowly won the First Selectman title by 21 votes in a four way race. Voting confusion followed as results showed Taxpayers candidate Albert T. Scully close behind, with Democrat Frederick P. Kimball and Independent Alana Clarke also in the tally. City approves four charter changes including 42 hour firemen week
Bridgeport voters approved all four city charter referendum proposals. The 42 hour work week for firemen passed 13 420 to 10 656. Tax merger won 10 683 to 5 417. Pension boosts for firemen and policemen carried 9 388 to 6 655. Janitors and engineers pension proposal won 9 036 to 6 004. A simple majority was required.
Democrats Sweep Tops City Posts In Close Victory
Samuel J. Tedesco 42, a City Court judge and former state legislator, ousted Mayor Jasper McLevy by 161 votes to end his 24 year Socialist tenure. Democrats seized 10 of 16 alderman seats and two of three Board of Education posts, while Socialists lost key city posts including City Clerk and Town Clerk. The near record turnout was 53,779, second only to 1949.
