One had malaria before donation, the other developed anemia and weakness after receiving five units of whole blood during open heart surgery. CDC linked both cases to donated blood but noted recovery with treatment. The report cites a veteran who had spent a year in Vietnam and a Texas hospital donor evaluated by the CDC.
