Week end fine weather drew record crowds to beaches and shore resorts with high highway traffic. many shore cottages opened for the season and gay parties were noted. Concession booths were busy as awaitant summer profits loom. most resorts plan grand openings on Decoration Day.
George Withama of Kossuth Street was seen swaggering along Water Street early yesterday with a bag he claimed contained something precious. An officer inspected the bag, Williams refused to identify himself, and two liquor bottles were discovered wrapped in cloth. Williams was arrested for drunkenness and later refused to provide his name or address.
New York May 27 A southbound passenger train of the Putnam division New York Central struck an obstruction near Van Cortlandt Park Bronx. Engineer John Kirk was killed and eight others injured as the locomotive overturned trapping the engineer. The timber obstruction eight feet long and three inches wide is believed placed on the tracks by mischievous boys.
A seventeen year old girl seeking death in Seaside Park was dragged from surf by a passing motorist after a moonlit plunge. She provided limited details, claimed a New York address, and was taken to Hillside Home for detention. Police wire her description to New York, while relatives and witnesses face questions. William Casey's wife and Jaona expected to testify against him in city court for a separate disturbance arrest at Main Street home.
Supreme court freed United church from long delay enabling new church and parish house plans. Rev Dr William Horace Day urged growth with a city population rising. he warned that without education and religion growth would falter. He spoke of obedience to vision and the need for character based prosperity.
President and Mrs. Harding joined the congregation at First Presbyterian Church in Washington to dedicate pews once used by Ulysses S. Grant and John D. Dahlgren to soldiers and sailors. Dr. John Brittan Clark delivered a Memorial Sunday sermon warning against moves to replace the Red, White and Blue with a Red standard.
May 27 a massive fire in Ste Agathe, Canada, left seventy eight families homeless and destroyed 150 buildings. Firefighters from neighboring towns used dynamite to halt the spread, saving the northern districts with wealthy homes and hotels. One person was slightly injured. the homeless were housed in the town hall, a school, and a tuberculosis sanitarium.
Eugene V Debs spoke to about 1,000 people in New Haven, declaring the social system has fulfilled its historic mission and will yield to a newer order based on socialism. He noted his eight months in Atlanta federal prison for wartime activities and touched briefly on his prison experiences.
In New Haven a Mussolini slogan at a commemoration of Italy's entry into World War I spurred a small riot. About 300 people attended at the Sans of Italy hall as fascist and anti fascist factions collided. Italian consul Pasquale De Curio was struck on the head with a chair and required medical attention.
German industrialists back a government reparations plan with pledges to support an international loan and finance a private operation of the railways. The proposal also calls for reorganizing utilities and imposing gold-based real estate mortgages projected to yield substantial revenue, while facing Socialist opposition.
Mexico City May 37 Associated Press The police at Guadalajara arrested Madaro Lopez on a charge of authoring the bomb that exploded near the American consulate on May 17. Lopez, a former army captain later a general, was active in revolutionary circles. Police say he arrived in Mexico City under an assumed name as US officials met to discuss resuming relations. He is alleged to have smuggled arms by air into Mexico and is suspected of planning with an accomplice.
Captain Donald J. MacMillan will sail June 16 from Wiscasset on the Bowdoin to resume Arctic exploration. The trip will study whether a new ice age is beginning, alongside magnetic, atmospheric, botanical, and ornithological research. Thirty thousand feet of motion picture film will be captured. Copper strips on the hull will ground the radio station enabling nighttime North Pole broadcasts to copy WP wireless news. The American Radio Relay League joins the effort, with signals expected across North America despite possible interference from the Northern Lights. A Geographical Society tablet will be placed at Cape Sabine in memory of the Greely expedition, where several men died.
New York May 27 Dr Wade Hampton Brown of the Rockefeller Institute announced that sleeping sickness patients respond quickly to a new drug tryparsamid used for paresis The discovery was made by Dr Louise Pearce of the institute staff who spent four months in the Belgian Congo camp The drug has produced remarkable recoveries though not yet an absolute cure and confirms sleeping sickness as a brain disease
Upwards of 1700 graves of Civil Spanish and World War dead in Bridgeport Stratford and Fartela were decorated with flags flowers and plants by veterans groups and posts yesterday Memorial Sunday services and patriotic sermons followed in several churches A large array of bugle calls and musical programs marked the day with scouts in uniform and ministers delivering messages of remembrance.
In Bochum Germany on May 27 seven people were killed and three wounded as civilians and volunteer police clash with Communists. Firemen and police report ongoing rioting with Communists armed and organized. Troops at Buer repulse revolting Communists as violence spreads to outskirts and mines nearby.
Five people die when a Detroit Pontiac interurban car collides with a passing automobile on Woodward Avenue near the fifteen mile road. The wreck triggers a chain collision as cars and a motorcycle are involved. Injured passengers are taken to hospitals. identities of the deceased are not yet released. A separate Hartford incident reports Walter Kingsrey, 19, killed and Richard Porter seriously injured in a bicycle car collision. Friar remains in hospital awaiting recovery.
Vice President Calvin Coolidge and Mrs Coolidge spoke at Memorial Sunday events urging government economy and taxpayer restraint. He stressed the spirit of Americans and warned against autocratic rule, saying unity and individual effort sustain the republic and peace. The vice president and the party arrived at one o'clock, were greeted by officials, and met with local leaders at an informal reception.
New York May 27 Prime Minister Sikorski and his cabinet quit following an adverse diet vote on the premier's bid for a confidence motion. The report says Christian Socialists and minority nationals joined in opposition, citing policy toward refugees from Uhrates and related expulsions.
