An official admiralty bulletin reports the British steamer Moldavia torpedoed and sunk with 56 American troops aboard unaccounted for. The Inniscarra, Cork bound, torpedoed and sunk with 37 crew lost. five survivors landed. Casualties and missing presumed from disaster.
Secretary of War Baker announced that American infantry machine gun units and artillery would soon fight alongside Italy on the Italian front. He highlighted American Red Cross and Sanitary Corps presence and stressed allied unity and sacrifice for a common victory.
Atlantic division Red Cross reports over top of 35 million goal with city totals at 7.5 million for the day. Major gifts include 3 million from Rockefeller group and 509 thousand from General Electric. Notable donors include William Rockefeller Frederick Vanderbilt George Ehret Nicholas Brady Osborn and many steel firms contributing over 5 million.
In Civil Superior court Judge Warner rejected a plea by a New York lawyer for Generoso Seregano formerly of Stamford now in New York. Seregano sought exemption claiming dependents in New York and his wife Annie Seregano sued for divorce on grounds of desertion. The judge, noting Seregano had been held in contempt for alimony, gave little weight to the defense and continued the case.

A fake fire in a smoke pot atop the American Hardware building at Fairfield avenue and Middle street drew over 2,000 spectators within two minutes. Frances Starr and Warry Dell, Broadway stars, come to Poli's theater Sunday at 2 30 for a Red Cross benefit for Team 14 of Division B led by Captain Charles F. Greene. The show, donated by 8. Z. Poli, features dancing and singing acts plus Mary Ryan and Jimmy Britt. Tickets go on sale at Hirdle's and D. M. Read's store.
Colonel Alphonso Tancredi urged steadfast resistance to the foe at a mass Italian day rally in an armory. The meeting drew about four thousand and featured Italian society leaders, songs, a Red Cross appeal, and a concluding program with music and dance.
Team No Five expanded its Red Cross campaign with carnation sales and a public weighing stunt on Main Street. A nameless man paid $20 for a carnation, while others paid up to five dollars and one girl earned a ten dollar bill for a flower. Over 2,000 carnations were sold, led by Chairman Edward Buckingham who cited Trallanay and drafted men in honoр.
New Haven May 24 The state wide ballot of trolleymen on the Connecticut company line shows likely rejection of the 88 to 45 cent wage demand, with company offers at 34 to 40 cents. A conference aimed at averting a strike will resume tomorrow afternoon as Gartland and Punderford seek a compromise before locals vote.
Private Harold G. Grannan of the 114th Infantry leaped from a compartment window as a troop train neared Fairfield. Military police chased the deserter through Bridgeport streets but did not arrest him by nightfall. Grannan reportedly feared an early transfer to France and a possible embarkation.
Aleck Paraka reported losing 110 dollars in a rear saloon poker game at 621 Laufayrtie street and was taken to police headquarters. Patrolman Casey detained Antonio Myscinko and Peter Slinko at the same saloon on gambling charges as Paraka, Myscinko, and Slinko were jailed pending morning arraignment.
About 4000 in Poli Theatre last night for the Midnight Frolic, a paperboys benefit for the Red Cross. Over 3000 dollars from ticket sales plus additional collections and a 150 dollar auction raise funds, with Poli Theatre owner S. Z. Poli donating use of the hall again. Performers and stage hands donated time, and journalist William W. Roberts of The Telegram led the effort with energy and persistence.
Police rounded up five alleged receivers of stolen goods following a confession by Joseph Gall of New York. The suspects include Daniel Deseo of 178 Andover Street, Peter Nowak of 176 Andover Street, Joseph Secziewoski of 16 Andover Street, Sigmund Ehlench of 201 Osborne Street, and Louis Gottlish of 235 PE Street. The loot, valued at about $200, consisted of dry goods and furnishings. Gall claimed he ran a regular haberdashery theft operation across Bridgeport, New York, and Hartford, with the others allegedly aiding in receiving the plunder.
Washington May 24 female munitions workers in Washington urged President Wilson to back the federal woman suffrage amendment with a letter from Secretary Tumulty stating nothing they could say would move him and that he had done all he could to promote passage with honor and propriety.
Harry H. DeLoss, vice president of Handy and Harman, is reported improving at 187 Park Place after several days of double pneumonia. Dr. C. N. Haskell spent the day with him. DeLoss recently returned from Washington where he served on the national housing committee in the labor department.
Captain Francis B. Barnett, the sole chaplain with Roosevelt Hospital unit Base Hospital No. 15 in France since June, rests at Twin Lakes after returning to New York. He will recuperate a week, then move to Ridley Park, Philadelphia, to resume Episcopal church duties and may return to France to continue his work. The unit’s heavy load and his strain prompted the U.S. return for a rest.
In Hartford on May 24 between four hundred and five hundred men of craft age were gathered by route agents police and volunteers to show registration cards. Saloon pool rooms restaurants and dance halls were searched and men without cards were taken to the state armory for questioning. The rest were held for the night. A separate note reports nine year old Louise Almasy struck by a jitney while playing near 145 Charen street with no serious injuries but kept for examination at Bridgeport Hospital.
Costa Rica announces war against the Central powers as of May 24, with government advisors reporting the action from San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The move signals full engagement in the conflict and could widen regional involvement in the war.
