Senate Tariff Bloc Defeated by Committee
Washington May 15 The Senate Republican Tariff Bloc failed in its first test of strategy as the Finance Committee accepted most farm product tariff rates but the Johnson amendment to raise the rate to nine cents fell 32 to 38. Democrats supported the bloc while several Republicans crossed, and the panel kept the committee rate at six cents per pound with no added duty on citrus as the floor debate continued.
