Curran Bailey Lee lead Democrats claim victory in Bridgeport mayoral race amid GOP criticism of the administration. Speakers including Sen Caldwell and Bailey praised Curran while urging further youth turnout and voter support. discussion touched on age voting limits and future political strategy.
Bridgeport Superior Court Judge Robert J. Testa is invited to speak at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on criminal law codification. In a unanimous ruling the U S Court of Appeals refused to block the Postal Service rate increase set to take effect at midnight Sunday. The decision leaves intact a lower court order denying a temporary injunction sought by newspaper and magazine publishers and other mail users. The new rates raise first class letters from 6 to 8 cents, all mail stamps from 10 to 11 cents, and post cards from 3 to 6 cents, with overall mail class increases averaging about 1 cent.
STAMFORD State Patrolman Ward DeMelio and Giordano were arrested in a Greenwich toll plaza theft probe. They, along with a maintenance man, were charged with embezzlement and gambling violations. Bonds were set at 19000 each as Judge Howard Moraghan scheduled hearings for Monday. Gov. Meskill criticized cooperation lapses in the investigation.

Two Derby men, Joseph DiTauri 27 and Larry Hansen 18, were charged with breaking and entering in two Hyde's Pharmacy robberies. Police said about 8,000 various pills, cigarettes and jewelry were taken from 58 Anson Street raid site. Hansen held on $5,000 bond. DiTauri on $5,000 bond. Both face Circuit Court in Ansonia on June 5.
Allied forces push into Cambodia with two task forces moving from Kandat Chrum southward to link with units from Kompong Trach. The operation reaches up to two miles inside the border as commanders report substantial activity near Parrot's Beak and in regions southwest of Kompong Trach. South Vietnamese infantry pressed north from the Mekong Delta, killing 27 enemy troops and seizing rifles, while reporting casualties among allied forces.
Mrs Day a former concert stage soprano dies in Dutchess County after serving on the boards of the Dutchess County Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bard College church group. She was a Sunday painter and member of multiple local and regional organizations including St John the Evangelist church vestry. Services set for Bard College rector presiding with burial in Rhinebeck cemetery.
A coalition urged Governor Meskill and the State Bond Commission to release $2.1 million in borrowed funds for summer programs, arguing the delay will harm inner city youths. SAATFORD AP Governor Gin Thomas J. Meskill said he did not know when making recent appointments to the Commission for Higher Education that one man replaced was black. The controversy over replacing Rev. Edwin Edmonds of New Haven, an African American clergyman, drew sharp criticism from the Caucus of Black Legislators who called the action callous toward black children. They cited Irene Novak as being alive in trying to recall a Westport Board of Education member who voted for Project Concerto, which directed city children, many of them black, to suburban schools. Meskill defended Novak’s background and stated he was not aware of anything in her background that would lend credence to the complaint. He had previously faced criticism from Donald McGannon of New Canaan, chairman of the CBE, for appointing an all-white commission, though McGannon declined to resign as Meskill asked. Friday’s conference marked the first public indication by Meskill that he did not know Edmonds was the CHE’s only black member. The governor had said he did not appoint by race, creed, or color, and would appoint a black member if McGannon resigned.
