Fairfield voters will decide on a school budget referendum May 21 from noon to 8 pm. The question asks to reduce instructional services funding from 2,890,200 to 2,790,000 for 1958 59, aiming to limit teacher salary increments to one step.

Bridgeport police led by Capt. John Carroll raided nine gambling dens at 11 45 am seizing two women and two men plus five telephones and betting slips. Capt. Lyddy called it the largest local gambling sweep in years. 20 plainclothes officers took part. Mrs Gertrude Johnson 34 of 22 Ash Street faced policy playing charges with $500 bail after door entry by force. Louise Delorenzo Frank Savastano and Richard Peterson also arrested on policy or base ball pool charges with bail set at $500 each.
Congress approved a large pay raise for U S armed forces amid House and Senate approval. The bill provides about 576 million dollars in the first year with raises from 6 to 60 percent for most servicemen after two years in uniform. Generals and admirals receive the largest hikes and special responsibility pay is created for a limited number of officers. The measure aims to recruit and retain trained personnel in the military. President Eisenhower is expected to sign, with raises to take effect soon.
Patsy Caralla, 45, of 8 Pequonnock Street, was saved from drowning at Seaside Park around 8 PM after entering the water at Main Street. Passersby Andy Topalian, 25, and Raul Hazard, 35, jumped in to assist, bringing him to shore where he was taken by city ambulance to St. Vincent's Hospital for treatment of submersion.
Four year old Anna Haley of Broad Street was fatally struck by an auto at 6 45 last night on North Frontage Street off Broad Street. Driver Joseph Kornegay Jr 25 of Railroad Avenue is held on negligent homicide and driving without a license in bail set at 1000 pending further investigation. Police say the child was crossing from north to south side when struck by the right front bumper and dragged 20 to 30 feet. Kornegay said he was unaware until his wife shouted.
The atomic powered submarine Nautilus slipped past a task force including destroyers helicopters and patrol planes. The mission was to reach the patrol area 160 miles southwest of San Diego and enter the harbor entrance without being detected or sunk by defending forces.
Vice President Nixon travels from Bogota to Caracas on a Latin American goodwill tour. Secret Service chief A. E. Baughman says a secondhand unverified report warned of an assassination attempt in Venezuela. He notes extra precautions in Caracas while denying increased guard levels and cites prior threats and a Lima protest incident.
An aide to Vice President Nixon frames the issue as routine in Bogota as reports of a threat surface. The AP dispatch notes ongoing coverage and that the story continues on Page Eight.
Forty five float applications were received at a Barnum Festival float meeting at the G E Institute. Float Marshal Joseph T Sullivan called it the biggest response in years at this early date. The deadline was extended from May 15 to June to accommodate later requests. Donald E McFarland announced float specifications for the July 4 parade and offered design assistance through the Float Design Committee. Committee members include Robert E Redmann, Robert G Neubauer, Laird F Covey, and Chris Wesche. Early entrants include the YMCA Ski Club, 4 H Club of Fairfield, General Electric, University of Bridgeport, and about 16 Junior Chamber floats from around the state.
An Israeli diplomat visiting Bridgeport yesterday voiced confidence a peaceful settlement with neighbors will be reached within a decade. Consul General Simchn Pratt in New York City spoke at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon and a University of Bridgeport meeting, praising American industry and noting immigrants shifted to farming after the war provide 70 percent of local food needs.
May 12 Hartford Herman Wolf resigns as executive aide to Governor Ribicoff effective July 1. Wolf plans to form Herman Wolf and Associates in Hartford to provide development services for business and industry. He led StratfordDemocratic town chairmanship 1948 to 1952 and aided the 1954 campaign. He coordinated post flood recovery with the Development Commission and State Labor dept. No successor named.
United States with six percent of world population produces about half of food and nine workers support farming. Lt Col Lloyd G Coutts USMC told National Resources Conference that quality of manpower matters more than quantity and nations should plan for effective utilization of manpower. He compared U S strategy with Russia where about half of workers are in agriculture or related fields.
A Staples school budget of 497335 was approved by about 35 taxpayers. The Board of Finance set the 1938 59 tax rate at 29.8 mills, up from 22.3. Irving Sartorius was re elected to the Regional Board of Education for three years. Deeds were accepted for Blanchard Ter saha and Bartling drives and New man drive. A quit claim deed was approved for land on Westwood road.
Dunking and ducking marked last night’s Father Daughter Play Day at the North End Girls’ clubs as part of National Girls’ Club Week. A pool party, freak diving contests, obstacle races, gym games, and doughnuts closed the evening while 400 and more fathers and daughters attended the largest Fathers’ Night turnout to date.
Bridgeport Housing Authority votes to cut rents for unemployed residents in city projects and to admit jobless applicants under a new method. Rents will be reviewed every 60 days, with June notices outlining July 1 changes. Unemployment income remains part of rent calculations under the plan.
