Function of a Lightning Arrester
A lightning arrester directs electrical energy from an antenna to ground rather than through the receiver. Lower resistance in the arrester allows energy to flow more easily, and a vacuum gap is favored over air for reduced resistance. The illustration shows an effective vacuum arrester design.
Home Made Lightning Arrester Demonstration
A simple lightning arrester can be built at home using a small flashlight bulb and socket. The bulb is burned out by shorting across a 22.5 volt B battery, then mounted on a window sill with one socket terminal to the leaden and the other to the outside ground.
