Mayo Defense Quits Bigamy Case With Form Rite Claim
In New York on May 2, Virginiag St Julian Mayo, a wealthy manufacturer, faced a two year bigamy charge as his defense contends the 1904 ceremony with Wilhelm Meyer was a mere form to satisfy relatives before a separate union. Meyer, privy to the ceremony, knew Mayo’s prior marriage and that he had not been divorced. The defense asserts Mayo spent time in New York from New Haven, managed his Net Woven factory from that office, and later formed another attachment with Mrs Dudley in Brooklyn before remarrying. They argue five years in the state bars the crime, and that Mayo’s prosecution aims to collect a judgment from Miss Mover after a prior break in 1915.
