Groves Reveals Atomic Barrier Fears in Normandy Tale

New York March 27 AP The man who led America's senior scientists on the Manhattan Project describes plans for a German radioactive barrier during the Normandy invasion. He says plans existed to warn Allies against an atomic attack but none offered a safe alternative. Groves recalls alerts to Eisenhower and Marshall and notes the effort's heavy moral cost.

Atomic energy would have spread elsewhere in mid century

Groves states atomic energy would have developed somewhere in the mid twentieth century. He notes the high cost and low chances of success would have deterred a peaceful U.S. effort, suggesting a rival nation might have first harnessed the power and gained global dominance.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded a $202,832 contract to Barns Engineering Company of Stamford Connecticut for design and construction of four radiometers for the Tiros weather satellite. NASA informed Senator Prescott Bush that the work will be done in Stamford.

Britain’s Dreadnought Nuclear Sub Damaged by Fire

A shipyard spokesman said Britain's first nuclear submarine the Dreadnought was slightly damaged by a fire. The incident occurred last night in the insulation of a cabin wall. The vessel is to be commissioned early next year.
