Whiskey Runner's Murder Trial Stays Unshaken
In Hartford on March 2, Domi nick Cropanese, an automobile mechanic and self proclaimed whiskey runner, testified in the James Clanslone and Michael Rugeris murder case. He described the September 1920 killing of Enio Renaldino, saying Rugeris forced Renaldino onto the car steering wheel and Clanslone fired a shot behind the rear, amid attempts to stage a suicide. Cropanese recounted clashes in 1921 with Clanslone, years of liquor-running implications, and revealed details about a razor encounter, payback for owed money, and whiskey transport to New Britain and Brooklyn. Evidence included blood-stained clothing, a head wound, and a revolver found with Renaldino, plus a handwriting expert disputing a memorandum in Renaldino’s car notebook. The courtroom was packed as testimony moved to challenge the witness.
