Paris reports and Berlin statement both confirm a long range system shelling Paris from the forest of St Gobain about 76 miles away. The monster cannon fired through Sunday with shells causing alarm, sheltering crowds, and churchgoers filling streets as authorities assess the threat and proximity.
City heads of ordnance firms dismissed Berlin despatches that Germans shelled Paris with a 76 mile gun. John Stanley of American & British Manufacturing questioned Verne’s prophecies about firing a shell within a shell and gas masks, calling the tale an unlikely canard. Other gun makers and an army officer echoed disbelief, citing current ranges of 20 to 25 miles as the limit.
The Associated Press reports the Distinguished Service Cross awarded to nine American soldiers with three dead. Recipients include Second Lieutenant A W Terrell and Privates Intermean Conioy Lenni Fillengen, all in the same infantry regiment. others named include Thomas Peterson and James H West despite fatalities.
