London Punch and American humor paces in empire satire
John T Wheeler notes Punch's British roots and American influence, tracing top cartoonists Tenniel Leach and Du Maurier, and detailing American imitators like Vanity Fair and Puck. He recalls Nast and Nasby’s Civil War era satire, and reflects on the rise and fall of Punch for two nations, with commentary on cross Atlantic reception.
