March 19 details show Connecticut infantry joining British and French units in two successful raids in the Badon dille region. About 300 yards of German trench line reported taken with no prisoners, as German counter bombardment followed the French and American assault.
The East Side post office on East Main Street and Bar Avenue is planned to move to a newly erected building in Barnum about 109 feet east of the current site. The new two story structure will house about 4,000 square feet of floor space and be the best lit and apportioned post office in New England. Construction is by Pardy Construction Co under W J Barone supervision. Phillip R Carrel will supervise operations. Weather: fair in New England, warmer interior Wednesday, cooler Thursday.
Washington reports the food administration outlines steps to extend flour stocks to feed the nation and maintain allied shipments until the next harvest. It targets the baking trade which uses 40 percent of flour, approves sharing of flour, distribution of substitutes, and a nationwide anti waste campaign to be launched after a Chicago meeting next Friday.
Samuel Clark Sr was fined $230 in Common Pleas by Judge John R. Booth in the Human Gold vs Clark case. The decision held citizens may aid officers in arrests but must avoid undue force after Officer Doolan used a blackjack near the U M C plant on August 7, 1917, injuring merchant Gold and disrupting his business.
Eight more alleged victims reported to Police headquarters recounting swindles by Dr Ayer ranging from 40 to 120 dollars. Total alleged losses exceed 1,200 dollars including payments by Thomas Jatkevicz, Nicholas Robinge, Julius Suzasz, Phomias, Mose Primo, and Charles Bartuchevitz, with detectives sent to New York City to pursue the suspect.

Wisconsin reports show a tight race in the senatorial primary to fill the Hast ing vacancy. Irvine Lenroot and James Thompson led in early returns, with Lenroot 11,205 to Thompson 11,788 across 31 counties. Davies leads the Democratic side for federal trade commissioner, five to one over McCarthy. Berger the Socialist candidate has a small vote.
Albany March 19 The New York Assembly by a landslide vote deferred action indefinitely on pending prohibition bills. Leaders say the move kills proposals to ratify the federal prohibition amendment or to hold a statewide referendum unless the Senate acts. A Dry bloc head says ratification is dead but a referendum likely prevented. Senate action on the ratification question is scheduled for tomorrow.
Detectives hunt an Italian and a Spaniard linked to a $1,500 swindle yesterday morning in New Haven. The two men allegedly used a handkerchief ruse, requesting $1,500 as “good faith” while claiming to handle $3,500 in cash, then swapped the bundles to steal the money. Police and state authorities press for the extradition of J Harry Crossley from New York to Bridgeport within two weeks. Detectives in Bridgeport probe Crossley’s alleged forgeries including Town Clerk Schultz’s name in real estate documents and related schemes.
Abram Krup, 26, sold newspapers claiming to recount the sinking of an American battleship. He was sentenced to ten days in county prison. The magistrate announced a crusade to curb mutal and terrify people with fake disaster reports during the war.
Judge John S. Pullman addressed a Clinton avenue crowd at Elias Howe school urging Bridgeport residents to quit laxity and increase overtime. He condemned critics of Washington and demanded loyalty, courage, and determination to support soldiers overseas. Continued on page t.

General Eugene Kelly used Poli's theatre vaudeville troupe at noon to boost a stamp sale for his post office campaign, while General George W. O'Shea interrupted and shared the stage on a 60 40 split. Kelly led in sales for the day with 5933 dollars against 5018 67 dollars, and overall totals showed Kelly sellers at 58991 37 versus O'Shea 59080 57. An open air show organized by Matt Saunders and Chris Hickard brought the troupe to a central city corner with a moving truck and piano for the performance.
The federal Milk Commission, meeting in New York, ordered a price cut on bottled milk effective April 1. Bridgeport customers face reduced rates for various bottled milks though bulk milk prices remain unchanged. Farmers will be paid $2.50 per hundred pounds for milk in the 150 mile radius.
Washington discusses the Supreme War Council at Versailles as the key to 1918 western front strategy. The council, led by President Wilson’s push for aggressive action, would pool allied reserves for concentrated attacks. Allied plans may shift to the Italian front as the main theater of war this year, with expectations of coordinated offensives if Germany drives are avoided.
Bridgeport’s American Red Cross chapter announces a citywide tag day this Saturday to raise $20,000. Treasurer Frank T. Staples notes $116,900 has been raised locally, with $116.80 disbursed, and points to prior drives including 10,000 for February, 77,000 from the War Fund, and 20,009 from a Christ membership drive plus $4,309 in special donations.
