Townsend Convicted on Assault Counts after Shootout
Townsend, a 13-year-old black militant, was found guilty on two counts of aggravated assault arising from a Jan. 5 exchange of gunfire with Intelligence division officers on Broad Street. The all white jury deliberated for about three days before delivering verdicts on the two assault charges. Judge Tierney set final disposition for Aug. 4 after a pre sentence report, and Townsend remains free on $100,000 bonds posted for his release. The officers testified Townsend fired at close range with a military style pistol after they approached him outside his apartment.
