City preps for statewide air raid drill with sirens to sound at 10 a.m. The three minute red alert followed by a ten minute all clear will stop traffic and curb vehicles except emergency ones. Civil Defense chief Wesche says full industry cooperation expected as spotters report 24 hour readiness.
Washington reports that Russia agreed to return 186 ships received during World War II and sought to buy 167 more, a bid rejected as talks revive after months. The U S seeks full return of all ships with disputes over their wartime value and arbitration.

Allied fire repelled Chinese Reds on western front hills north of Chorwon for a sixth straight day of the bloodiest fighting since New Year's. About 750 Reds massed for a final assault before retreating under heavy UN mortar and artillery fire. American planes supported, and heavy clashes spread toward Kumhwa, Kumsong, the Pukhan river, and the Punchbowl as both sides pressed for ground.
The Common council tabled a State Highway Department request for microfilm copies of all city land records, amid Alderman Sandula questioning why all deeds are needed rather than only those along the Route No 1 expressway. A June 10 letter from Edward Harris proposed city authorization for a private firm to print microfilm, with state-funded filming of the remainder and later copies to the city. Two Idye boys, Robert and Richard Langs, 13, drowned when their canoe capsized in Lake Ontario off Rochester. Edward Schoepfel, 11, swam to shore and survived after being rescued by a passerby in a motor boat. authorities searched for the bodies through the night.

In Portland Maine unofficial tallies show Governor Frederick G Payne leading Senator Owen Brewster in a bitter Republican primary. Democratic contests also heated with Roger P Dube and Earl S Grant leading in the Senate race and Burton M Cross expanding his lead in the GOP gubernatorial contest.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower tentatively approved a midwestern Republican farm plan calling for federal crop support without price or production controls. He said the idea, originated in Iowa, needs expert discussion and sought more farm input. the plan would curtail secretary of agriculture authority and reorganize the department for efficiency.
