Taxpayer Loses Bid to Bar IRS Summons to Boss

The Supreme Court ruled that a taxpayer has no right to intervene in a proceeding enforcing an Internal Revenue Service summons directed to the taxpayer’s former employee and its accountant. The summons sought production of records relating to the tax liability of Kevin L. Donaldson. The court held the summons targeted the employer’s records, not Donaldson’s, and rejected arguments that IRS summons cannot aid investigations likely to lead to civil or criminal actions.
