Aviation hero Charles Lindbergh told New York audiences that a bigger air fleet would deter war and urged a major airport for the city. He pressed for expanded passenger air service and noted U.S. need for robust aviation infrastructure and trained pilots, while praising wartime readiness.
New York dated June 15 reports Col. Charles A. Lindbergh is likely to travel to Boston in response to Governor Fuller invitation. Major James O F Winston, representing the governor, says Lindbergh assured him he would visit, though immediate plans remain unsettled.
In a statement to the Associated Press Colonel Charles A Lindbergh absolved Anacostia naval air station personnel of any fault over the Spirit of St Louis issue. He said a motor hiccup caused by a stuck follower stemmed from a non serious and quickly remedied problem not due to carelessness. Major Mitchell accused Washington of fault, contending incompetent mechanics bore responsibility for the defective motor prior to Lindberghs planned flight.
June 15 New Haven Associated Press reports that six eclectic doctors facing CT license revocation hearings in Superior Court were found to have received honorary degrees from the Kansas City College of Medicine and Surgery for payment. Testimony listed nine regular degree holders and noted missing names on the honorary list, while others faced scrutiny over admissions standards and faculty.
John R Slattery formerly of the Josephite order who resigned as priest in 1903 and later married died leaving a net estate of 1,288,602. He willed 62,400 to an aunt and the remainder to his widow. After taxes and fees the estate would go to the New York Public Library, a claim that surprised relatives and library officials. Slattery, known as Boss Slattery for contracting work, inherited 380,000 from his father in 1905 and received 400,000 in 1912 from an uncle’s will.
Colonel Rex Delacour urged Bridgeport business leaders to wake up to aviation needs and press for a first class airport. He cited Pratt and Whitney, Brainard Field, and the potential for local parts makers to profit from aviation, noting Connecticut lags behind. The meeting endorsed mayor’s airport committee and called for swift action to establish a Bridgeport airport.
Providence June 16 AP Rockefeller urged shifting more college costs to students in a Brown University commencement address. He argued privately funded colleges now attract students seeking social or financial gain, not ministry or teaching, and proposed a financing method where students bear more cost. He cited 1923 24 private college current expenses near 140 million dollars with student fees, endowment income, and gifts supporting costs. The Remington contract dispute with the U S government ended with the Court of Claims ordering payment of 64682059 to Remington for overcharged brass conversion supplies.
Dublin June 15 Associated Press reports the final Cal Eireann tally shows Government including the speaker leading with 47 seats and Fianna Fail De Valera party 44, Independents 16, Farmers 11, National League 8, Sinn Fein 5, Independent Republican 1, total 183. One party extinguished by the general elections, founder Professor William Magennis losing his seat in Dublin.
Washington June 115 The War Secretary announced a new policy for the Army Air Corps restricting the chief and assistant chiefs from serving beyond a four year term to ensure promotion chances for other officers. Brigadier General Fechet, current air chief, proposed the rule to allow orderly succession as Major General Mason M Patrick nears retirement.
Wallingford, June 15. State Aviation Commissioner Clarence M. Knox and RL Pollet of Colonial Air Transport company praised a proposed airport and landing field at Wallingford. The site, deemed suitable, would be named Luthery Memorial Field to honor Raoul Luthery, a Wallingford ace killed in France.
Albany reported that street railway fares to Albany, Troy, Cohoes and Watervliet will rise to 10 cents effective July 1, under a Public Service Commission ruling. The current fare is 7 cents. Tokens offer savings at thirteen for one dollar. Schoolchildren fare increases from 3 to 5 cents.
Patrolman George Tenney of the Second precinct, returning from a fishing trip aboard his motorboat The Oriole, saved two youths from a capsize three miles from Bridgeport lighthouse. Louis Burton, 15, Alanson Road, and Harry Roemisch, 16, Cleveland, Ohio, were in the water over half an hour. The swimmers reached shore with the help of an ambulance, and the boys were treated for exhaustion.
President Coolidge continues his 1800 mile trip to the state game lodge in the Black Hills. He leaves Washington by special train and, amid cheers from Pierre and other South Dakota towns, spends the day viewing the countryside en route. The motor phase resumes for the final 33 miles to the lodge as the president and Mrs. Coolidge wave to awaiting crowds.
A Quebec City report claimed French flyers Nungesser and Coli were seen near River Bend, but government and lumber officials found no confirmation. Investigations extend across Chicoutimi to trace lights reported on the Saguenay region as authorities caution against premature conclusions.
Madrid June 15 Colonel Francesco De Pinedo, famed long distance flyer, left Madrid this evening for Barcellona to begin the final lap of his four continent journey to Rome. Weather forced a train passage for part of the trip and he was decorated with the air medal by King Alfonso this afternoon.
George Brousseau, a trapper on the Ste Marguerite river, says he heard an airplane engine on the evening of May 9 while fog prevented sighting it. He notes planes belonging to pulp and paper firms frequent the Saguenay area, and the aircraft may have been one of these.
St Louis crowd greets Rogers Hornsby as he is announced to take over managerial duties of the New York Giants when John J. McGraw retires after 1928. McGraw lauds Hornsby, praising his skill, leadership, and 100 percent effort as a turning point for the club. A 15,000-strong celebration follows with Hornsby’s batting display and a civic tribute from Mayor Victor Miller.
In Schenectady on June 15 the General Electric company showcased a four mile long train radio link between locomotive cab and caboose. A double antenna system transmitted and received short wave signals enabling instant communication over many cars. NY Central will install the gear on locomotives and yard points for road and yard testing, promising value where crews are separated by long spans.
Unfavorable conditions halted the coast to coast search for Captains Charles Gesser and Francois Oli near St Johns Newfoundland. Sidney Cotten remains with a big Danaire and hopes to resume operations as the search disperses tonight.
