Dempsey Acquitted In Slacker Charge Trial
A dull, conflict filled trial in Constantinople and the United States district court concluded with a verdict of not guilty for heavyweight Jock Dempsey on the slacker charge. Dempsey showed no emotion as the jury, after brief deliberation, returned a single ballot acquitting him. The case opened with attorney pleas and rapid jury instructions before the brief retreat to deliberate. The judge adjourned as spectators and supporters celebrated the acquittal, while Dempsey, a top contender for the heavyweight crown, faces renewed interest in a potential match. In Europe, Wrangel’s forces advanced, taking 4,000 Bolshevik prisoners and forty artillery pieces as the Bolsheviks retreated along the Crimea coast toward Mariupol and the Azov Sea. General Wrangel’s army, equipped with planes and armored cars, pressed from Crimea and Sevast Pool toward Perekop, while Bolshevik resistance yielded in the east under Slahog and Koutop commands. The broader military situation centered on the continuing White Army efforts against Bolshevik forces.
