Convicted assassin James Earl Ray and five others escaped Brushy Mountain Prison in Tennessee amid gunfire. Guards wounded one escapee, inmate Jerry Ward, and a manhunt with state troopers, FBI, and local sheriffs followed. Authorities traced escapes toward Danville Kentucky and Chattanooga while the White House coordinated federal support for the search.
Dutch marine commandos raided a hijacked train and a village school near Assen and Havensmilde at dawn. Six terrorists and two hostages died, four teachers and four gunmen captured, with several hostages reported unharmed. Broad participation by police, soldiers, and aircraft accompanied a high tension rescue operation.
Fort Worth, AP Nine year old Sandy Chandler spent her savings on a Washington trip to see President Carter about her mother Patricia Boake imprisoned on a three year sentence for band jumping and related charges. She flew with a one way $114 ticket and returned saying the President was unavailable. Delilah, 20, her sister, reported the case noting a long history from Arizona to Calgary and Canada.
Trumbull public school teachers unanimously rejected a three year contract offer from the Board of Education and threaten a fall strike if no agreement is reached. TEA president Richard Morrisey said the 403 member union supported a strike by a 9 to 1 margin with over 20 members present. The TEA seeks 6 percent raises in year one and 6.5 percent in years two and three totaling about 1.315 million. The board offered 5 percent each year totaling about 1.025 million. Negotiations will continue over the summer. a Septembers class boycott is possible but not certain.
