Spanish American Medals Confers Gallantry Honors
Washington June 2 Silver Star citations for gallantry in action in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish American War were awarded by the War Department. Major General Samuel S Sumner of Brookline Massachusetts was cited for valor at Santiago. A posthumous citation was given to Private Eustace Watkins for bravery at Manila Bay on September 14. Telegram from Gton reports the Bridgeport Chain Co of Bridgeport Conn won the Post Office department contract as the lowest bidder for safety key chains used in all offices next fiscal year starting July 1. Chains six feet long with swivel eye and key ring priced at 24 cents each in lots of 1 000. Government plans about 590 000 for office supplies across 52 000 post offices, with vast quantities of pens, ink, clips, pencils, ribbons, carbon paper, soap, towels, cheesecloth and flags to meet year demand. The firm declined comment on publicity last night.
