Newtown Man Advocates New England Steer Profits
Amherst Mass July 29 AP Raising steers in New England with carefully planned feeding yields profits from meat and manure. A Reynolds of Newtown Conn president of the Eastern Beef Producers association told tobacco raisers and farmers at Farm and Home Week that New England has an advantage over the corn belt due to available roughage feeds and valued manure. He cited near markets and higher prices for home grown beef, advised beef raising on farms growing cash crops with land needing organic dressings, and recommended daily rations of 45 pounds silage 1 2/3 pounds corn stover and 2 1/2 pounds cottonseed meal per head. He warned against overfeeding cottonseed meal beyond 3 pounds per thousand pounds live weight. For corn farmers without silage or hay he suggested fattening with corn stover cottonseed meal and oil meal plus turnips.
