Excess Profits Tax Near Doom Amid Public Hearings
Public hearings on the excess profits tax closed as lawmakers debated repeal and tax reform. Farmers pressed for higher taxes on large wealth while industry reps urged moderation, with the committee hearing varied proposals including a two cent stamp tax and a 49 cent per barrel fuel tax. James A. Emery urged repeal on behalf of the National Manufacturers Association. Representative Appleby supported modifications, and opponents argued corporations already pay little excess profits tax. A Boston lawyer warned against raising the normal corporate tax as farmers sought relief from wealth accumulations shifting tax burden.
