City's First Military Organization to Be Called to Duty
The Fourth Company under Captain A C Bennett departs as the city’s first unit to go active. One hundred nine men and two officers are on the roster, soon to march from Bridgeport to Fort Wright and join the 27th Long Island Sound Coast Artillery, now a battery of the 56th regiment. Most men train now in France with large railway guns, and the Bridgeport contingent is set to operate the Allies’ biggest guns. Captain Arthur C Bennett commanded the unit. Captain Camille Mazeau, then a lieutenant, stands to his left in the farewell photo.
