Gov Adlai Stevenson won the Democratic presidential nomination after Kefauver conceded on the third ballot. Tennessee switched its 28 votes to Stevenson, placing the Illinois governor over the required total as Kefauver urged party unity.
At the Democratic convention in Chicago on July 26, Adlai E. Stevenson informally accepted the nomination after Kefauver and Russell speeches. Reports circulated he would choose a running mate from Russell or Sparkman as Truman arrived to present Stevenson to delegates.
Washington July 25 The CIO Steel workers' Policy Committee officially ends the 54 day steel strike by ratifying a White House memorandum. 600,000 strikers will be told to return to work as back-to-work orders are delayed while ore workers and pay differentials are settled.
In Panmunjom the Allied armistice team recessed after the first open meeting as secret talks bogged down. Gen. Harrison announced a recess for a week while Gen. Clark's Tokyo HQ released updated prisoner statistics complicating prospects for agreement.
Official Weather Bureau notes fair warm weather with 85 degree high today and cool 60s tonight. Tomorrow will be in the upper 80s with light to moderate southwest winds. New York City sees similar conditions. The tide almanac shows July 26 as the 208th day with a sunset at 8 16 and sunrise at 5 50.
After two mild days with highs near 82 and a low of 63 the forecast calls for fair and warm weekend weather. Today should reach 85 with tomorrow in the upper 80s and no return of the recent hot spell.
Chicago July 25 AP states voted on the first two roll calls for the Democratic presidential nomination listing each state with candidate tallies such as Russell Kefauver Stevenson Harriman and Barkley. Results show varied support across regions with multiple states splitting votes between candidates.
Norwalk residents reported that U S Senator Brien McMahon of Norwalk remains critically ill after an operation at Georgetown Hospital. His brother Dr John D McMahon said he had taken a turn for the worse and his mother Mrs William H McMahon was at his bedside.
George Arthur Heroux, 22, named by the FBI as a top 10 fugitive, was captured in Florida after a pursuit in which he disarmed two hostage officers and a police car crash. He faces charges tied to bank robberies in Kansas and a death inquiry in Massachusetts.
Republicans in Bridgeport and most Connecticut communities set district conventions to nominate State Senate candidates. U S Senator nominee William A. Purtell of West Hartford will address the meeting at the Stratfield hotel at 2 p.m. Bridgesport Republicans also nominate candidates for the State House of Representatives Board of Education and City selectmen.
Horace Ashenfelter the 29 year old FBI agent from Penn State won the 3000 meter steeplechase in Helsinki. He defeated Vladimir Kazantsev of Russia on the final lap establishing an Olympic record and led Jamaica's George Rhoden to second place. Time 8 45.4.
Connecticut delegation on the first ballot pledged 16 votes to Senator Brien McMahon before switching to Governor Adlai E. Stevenson. Bailey announced the move from the floor at 5 p.m. after the first poll and before the tally.
President Truman lands in Chicago to rally Democrats behind the National convention nominee. He backs Adlai Stevenson of Illinois for the presidency as the first ballot unfolds, while Kansas City’s Thomas J. Gavin casts a vote for Stevenson as Truman boards his plane.
At Convention Hall in Chicago on July 2 the third and deciding ballot produced a series of tallies with Stevenson leading Kefauver and Russell, and Barkley Dever Ewing and Douglas receiving scattered votes. Not voting totaled two as the ballot went toward unanimity. Total 1,230.
Chicago July 25 AP Senator Smathers accused Georgia Senator Richard Russell of being victim to a deal by Kefauver forces in his Democratic primary campaign. Smathers claimed a price tag was attached to the Kefauver vote while Russell’s manager Edwin Johnson offered a cryptic remark as Russell hurried from a conference.
