In Birmingham on July 13 United States Senator Underwood warned the nation of a government captured by partisans and plunderers. He urged World War I veterans to return as leaders to defend the republic against rising taxation, high living costs, and a weakened justice system.
In Birmingham Alabama at the Rainbow Division association 61st reunion a resolution to exclude Orientals was voted down by the California delegation. Veterans pledged support to the government against Bolshevism and approved drafting capital and labor in a future war. They also went on record opposing District of Columbia suffrage.
