Broken Bridge Delays Traffic In City

Traffic on Stratford Avenue and surrounding routes stalled for hours as the east span of the broken bridge remained closed to allow the freighter John Catlin to pass. Superintendent Frank Squires and repair crew restored the mechanism by evening, opening one bridge side and diverting vehicles to the intact span. The Catlin docked at Wall Street wharf, and perishable goods were moved by trucks while the city awaited full reopening. The ship’s owner waived damages claims due to the temporary bridge failure.
