Crimes Against U S Reported On Increase
June 30 report shows crimes against the United States have risen about fivefold in five years. Attorney General Daugherty said 11 060 criminal cases were pending on July 1 1916, with over 13 000 projected this year. Prohibition largely drives the rise, while he noted staff cuts in the Department of Justice saving $487 200 annually by layoffs of 51 special assistants and 4h special agents including a high-salaried official earning $24 100 yearly.
