Medical Team Finds Way to Preserve Hearts Outside Bodies
New Orleans AP reports Dr. Francis Robicsek of Charlotte NC announced a method to keep hearts beating outside the body for 24 hours using a pressurized stabilizing system. The technique attaches a lung and preserves the heart with its own blood circulation, potentially aiding future transplants and possibly extending to kidneys and lungs. An South African surgeon Dr. Terry G O'Donovan attended and said he had not heard of the method.
