Washington reel disaster at the Knickerbocker theater leaves about 110 dead and around 200 injured as rescue workers battle debris. Soldiers police and volunteers guard the ruins while frantic relatives gather and doctors and nurses treat the wounded through the night.
Sir Ernest Shackleton, famed British polar explorer, died aboard the steamship Quest during a new Antarctic expedition. The body will be transported to Europe, with Captain Rusney accompanying homeward. Professor Gruoge and others continue the Fourth Expedition. Born in Ireland in 1874, Shackleton led several Antarctic ventures and earned the Victoria Cross era medals and global honors.
Eliza Malone, living at 1 Fant Street, New Haven, was found unconscious at 1449 Main Street, in the home of Mrs. May Davis. She was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital and remained in uncertain condition. Davis and Malone's husband faced court action in New Haven.
Jarelen Muratore, tenor of the Chicago company now at Manhattan Opera House, has appendicitis in his hotel. He is reported serious but could recover. he canceled engagements for Monday and Wednesday as doctors assess his condition and possible operation.
Bridgeport escaped the fury of a severe snowy Nor'easter the first since 1988. Snow accumulations reached six to eight inches with drifting in places, yet traffic and services remained largely normal as trains, trolleys, and telegraph lines stayed operational.
