Circus man to be tried for treating dogs
Joseph J. Pfau was arraigned in city court and held for trial after allegedly administering a purgative to 85 trained dogs at Barnum and Bailey winter quarters on Norman Street. Eighteen dogs died and more may perish, jeopardizing a $26,000 act and the show’s dog teams. Pfau, an expert with horses, used the same medicine on dogs, with several animals already dead and many more in critical condition. The losses threaten the dog acts for the coming season as training time is limited and teams are broken.
