Battery B Ferry Missed by Ice Jam on Long Island Sound
Bridgeport soldiers of Battery B 66th Artillery rode the General Nathaniel Greene from Plum Island to New London when an ice jam trapped the ship on Long Island Sound for about 26 hours. Lt Walker Sgt Smith and others endured cold and hunger with limited oats and coffee, aided by a violin and cornet as they waited for rescue from the ice and towing ships. The ordeal ended Saturday morning when the Greene reached the Thames dock and soldiers walked ashore toward a Strde Street restaurant.
