Early Watertown Methodism and Catholic Beginnings
A historical sketch notes the 1749 first Watertown Methodist sermon in North Watertown led by Father Hayes, his long service and later leadership, and the growth of the Watertown circuit. It records church construction, notable donors like Augustus Woolson, and a 19th century Catholic parish beginning with Masses in private homes, leading to a constructed church with a 1878 cornerstone.

St John the Evangelist Church and Mount St James Cemetery History
The Watertown parish grew from Thomaston with Terryville as a mission. Trustees Patrick Dunnigan and John Kane formed the 1884 beginnings. Rev. Fones, then Rev. Lancaster and Rev. O Donnell guided renovations and debt clearance. O Donnell modernized facilities and the cemetery, blessed in 1898 as Mount St James by Bishop Tierney. Loftus then led until 1902 and Judge until 1922.
