A fire at the Ducal theatre in Dessau during a rehearsal destroyed the building and killed the leading actress. The blaze began during a rehearsal, and the fire rapidly swept through the theatre.
Dublin January 25 Irish railroad directors agreed to arbitrate with their workers to avert a general strike, the decision announced this afternoon as talks continued over the wages and conditions at major lines.
In the Bridgeport Common Pleas Court a trial addressed right of way on the highway. Hirsh Bilenski, a former driver, sued Joe Ferruccio after a jitney and a truck collided near Connecticut and Central avenues. Bilenski testified of nine years driving and noted his experience in France and Brazil.
Cyril A. Betts, a Providence ice dealer, sues The Berkshire Ice Company for 6000 in damages over two boatloads of ice. Harry W. Walker of The Naugatuck Valley Ice Company faces a separate suit for 7000 tons claimed unfit for domestic use after a health board condemned the consignment in Bridgeport. The case involves alleged breach of contract, unmerchantable ice, and related financial losses.
Referee in Bankruptcy Carlton F Headiey of New Haven led a hearing in Norwalk on revoking a private sale of South Norwalk Fur Dressing and Dyeing Company assets. John Keogh, who issued the original sale order, testified to identify it. A continuation hearing on Ninbala Horvath cage is set for the next date.
In the past month the Superior Court office handled 143 filings. About half were divorce petitions and about a quarter involved automobile accidents. Remaining cases included receivership requests and foreclosures.
Gertrude Ki Bernstein a barber supplies dealer at 248 State Street filed for bankruptcy yesterday afternoon. The petition lists 490 stock in trade 100 automobile 150 due on accounts and 200 liquidated assets. Principal creditors include Samuel Schneidery 2047 Main 500 John Mantance 1393 Street 475 Rose Resnichoff Tth Avenue New York City 490 and Bernstein Brothers 290 Ath Avenue 500 on note. About 21 other small merchants are listed as creditors. No offer of composition is made.
Louis Katz a Bridgeport retail furniture dealer filed a bankruptcy petition listing assets of 2600 and liabilities of 299,127. The schedule lists 1200 in stock in trade 1099 open accounts 790 auto. Principal creditors include Harry Chernoff 450 Lois Roumtind 540 and about 180 creditors for smaller amounts. A 35 percent cash composition and five percent note were offered payable in 96 days.
Abraham Cohn of New York City sues Tsidore Shanen and Minnin Shanen of Stamford in New York Supreme Court for collection of a $4,221.38 judgment entered March 12, 1929, alleging no payment has been made. The action transfers to Superior Court for enforcement.
Arguments for a new trial in the case of Anthony Chapulis against Ideat Coal Company are set for a hearing on the Superior Court short calendar Friday morning. Chapulis, whose two daughters died when a wall of a coal bin collapsed, was recently awarded damages of 10 469 for the deaths by a jury in the same court. The Ideal Coal Company was represented by John A Cornell Jr. Chapulis was represented by Robert L. Rogan. Judge Christopher Is Avery will preside.

Mary E Seabridge filed a suit with the Town Clerk claiming permanent injury to her left arm and spine from a fall in the ladies washroom at Post's Theatre on January 8. She alleges the weighing machine platform projected over the floor causing the incident and seeks compensation. The case is returnable to the Superior Court on the first Tuesday of next month.
The Stamford Superior Court jury awarded James H. Ferris 75 percent in his damage suit against the city over grades in front of his property damaged when the street was repaved in August 1915. Ferris sought $5,000. The case, over three days before Judge Christopher L Avery, reached verdict after deliberations from 10:80 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Judge John R. Booth will preside in Danbury at February terms of the Connamon Pleas court with Judge John J. Walsh handling cases in Bridgeport. The clerk’s office in Bridgeport sets a January 31 deadline at 10 a.m. for printed trial detail claims. The court will continue to assign cases from the present trial docket as feasible.
Henry Ciuci, age 17, shattered the indoor golf mark at George Sparling's school yesterday afternoon with a 64. The former record of 70 was held by his brother Al Ciuci, who has since improved to 71 in a four-match stretch showing progress each game. Ciuci's four scores were 72, 71, 67, and 65.
