Johnson ousted as American League president

Chicago date January 23 AP report says Ban Johnson is no longer active president of the American League which he founded 27 years ago. Daeedall the league executive was removed due to ill health and will retain title and salary while his contract runs to 1939. Frank Navin Detroit chair and vice president named to assume duties. Landis the commissioner attended amid a planned showdown over Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker investigations. The owners unanimously repudiated criticism of Johnson and commended Landis for efforts to clear baseball of dishonesty.

Theatres Seek Tax Compromise in Connecticut

Hartford reports that over sixty theatre owners met in New Haven to discuss the movie tax and possible repeal or modification. Joseph W. Walsh, president of the association, said a full repeal is unlikely though changes to reduce operators’ burden while preserving producer taxes are favored. Double Fatality Inquest Declared Unnecessary

Coroner John J. Prolan said no inquest would be held into the death of Hazel Reina twenty five, shot Saturday night by her husband Rocco Reina thirty three of Greenwich at Southfield Point Stamford Roina after shooting his wife then killing himself. Witnesses were two children whose stories were verified. Motive cited as jealousy toward stepfather Rudolph Ite, keeper of the Stamford Lighthouse. Bolt Used in Killing Maybel Matheson

Mrs Adelaide I Spencer Sherman Dies at 82

Mrs Adelaide I Spencer Sherman widow of Eli B Sherman and mother of Mrs George Windsor and four Sherman daughters died at her home 55 Rus ing place in her eighty third year. She was a member of the Mary Silliman chapter Daughters of the American Revolution St George s Cathedral and trustee of the Protestant Widows Society. Born in Westbrook Gann she was the daughter of Captain Frederick W Spencer and Anne Biza Kerthind Spencer. Survived by four daughters and four grandchildren with one more grandchild. British Troops From India Ordered to China Amid Crisis

Indian troops were ordered to China as fears of serious trouble in China grew. British forces in India and naval contingents were mobilized with 1000 marines from Portsmouth and two Malta regiments held for use. Norwalk Man Dies After Auto Crash

Norwalk fifty year old George Uerman father of eight died at Norwalk hospital from internal injuries after being struck by an automobile driven by Salvatore Bracei of Noank Conn on the Post road shortly before midnight. Bracei helped Uerman to a drug store for first aid. ambulance carried him to the hospital. Bonds of 2000 were posted for Bracei. The car belonged to Colonel H C Cooper of Strawberry Stamford.

Woman Held in Yonkers as Suspect in Slaying

Bridgeport police report a Yonkers arrest in connection with the murder of Frank Wanzer in Danbury. Rose Gaboz e and a 16 year old boy were detained on suspicion of felony while police seek extradition. Danbury reports the victim’s body found in a house on Ta Road. Mrs Clark P Lane Jr Dies in Bridgeport Hospital

Mrs Clark P Lane Jr of Stratford died yesterday morning at Bridgeport Hospital after an operation. She had been hospitalized four days.
