A thick pea soup fog last night reduced visibility to about one eighth of a mile with a ceiling at 100 feet. The weatherman blamed the recent cold spell and snow for the dense fog and predicted cloudy mild weather for today and Wednesday.
A man questioned in Waterbury Conn says he is the so called mad bomber of New York City. Police here identified the man as George Metesky and report he made the claim while being questioned.
Police and Federal agents raided a two story building at 201 205 Railroad avenue uncovering a still with a 6000 gallon capacity. They seized 50 gallons of pure alcohol stored in a Stratford avenue furniture store and arrested Roberto Gusman 26 and Celso Pilotti 35. Both men face federal liquor tax charges and are held without bond.
A massive blaze on the South Side engulfed a rain elevator and spread to a nearby Continental Grain Co freighter along the Calumet river. About 85 fire units fought the flames while a fire boat tackled visible flames on the James Walsh as wind driven embers threatened surrounding grain elevators. No injuries reported though crowds gathered and debris forced evacuations.
The city reached an $80,000 agreement to buy the Wheeler property on Congress and Arch streets as part of a larger civic center project. Plans include assessing the rest of the block bounded by Washington Avenue, Golden Hill Street, and Harrison Street and obtaining appraisals before council approval. Three houses on the Wheeler tract currently house former employer tenants rent-free for six years, with occupancy to be secured and compensation arranged from the estate.
The Common Council approved a six per cent pay rise for about 2,000 classified municipal employees for the next fiscal year, awaiting Mayor McLevy's signature to take effect April 1. Civil Service commission and Personnel Director Linley proposed the plan amid criticism over valuation and wage levels. The measure could extend to 200 unclassified workers, while 880 public school teachers recently received a raise.
Washington witnessed a grand inaugural pageant as President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower rode in an open car through cheering multitudes. Police Chief Robert V. Murray estimated about 750000 people attended the ceremony and parade despite cool weather and a slight delay.
Railroads in Massachusetts and New Haven line officials announce permission requests for a five percent rise in passenger rates. Hollis Coyle testifies to the State Public Utilities Commission that ICC authority is anticipated by mid February. A meeting of the Bridgeport Boys' Clubs notes continued growth in programs for youth.
President Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie visited four inaugural balls at Armory and Hotels in Washington to greet thousands. A Citron gown for Mrs. Eisenhower contrasted with Ike’s formal wear as Guy Lombardo’s orchestra played Hail to the Chief. The event included Sam Rayburn and John Eisenhower among attendees with tight timetable slips.

Under new rules, bill introduction ends at 5 p m Wednesday Public hearings start January 29 The first hearing is tomorrow before the Finance committee to discuss changes to the bond financing plan for the 445 million Connecticut turnpike and the 54 million turnpike bond issue following recent failed bids The call includes lifting the four percent interest ceiling and proposed increases.
A stray white dog drew cheers during the inaugural parade as it trotted along the streets ahead of a marching unit. President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon laughed in the reviewing stand, and the president kept smiling during the salute.
In his inaugural address President Eisenhower warned that international communism threatens world stability while urging a peaceful path built on justice. He pledged heavy effort and sacrifice but expressed belief we can help heal a divided world.
