City officials discuss changes to a pay plan as part of evaluating a tax exemption and utility status for the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power project. Finance committee sets hearings on related tax issues while executive sessions consider substantial pay raises for city employees.
Francis Gary Powers, the former U2 pilot, obtained a divorce in Milledgeville Ga citing his wife Barbara Powers 28 as habitual intoxication and abuse. He was awarded $5000 alimony a lump sum plus $500 in legal fees.
A bandit escaped with 220 at Cumberland Farms on Fenelon Place in Stratford near Paradise Green around 4 AM. Manager William Schultz and Celeste Dobas were coerced to the back as the thief, described as 5 6 with dark hair and a dark coat, fled. Investigating officers Joseph Curlen and Anthony Bredice pursued the case.
A vast Arctic air mass moves into the northeastern United States on January 15, driving records to new lows in New York and northern New England. Temperatures dip below zero across eastern regions while only small pockets along the Gulf Coast, Rio Grande valley, southern Georgia, Florida, and coastal Southern California and Washington state escape the deep freeze.
The Planting division of the State Highway department recommends relocating Route 7 from Danbury to New Milford and improving the segment from New Milford to the Massachusetts line in a program costing about 49.4 million dollars. The proposal continues prior plans to reconstruct Route 7 from Norwalk to Danbury, with traffic studies predicting growth in Danbury Brookfield and New Milford. A proposed new four lane highway would run parallel to the existing Route 7, crossing the Housatonic River and terminating near News Milford’s business center, with interchanges at Route 133 Mountain road and Sullivan road. Two alternate routes were considered but not chosen.
In Caracas authorities report militants invaded a city museum, herding about 400 students into a vestibule and looting five French impressionist paintings valued around half a million dollars. A student was wounded as the group of about 12 terrorists, including two teenage girls, shouted slogans against the government. Paintings insured for the Louvre and MoMA were taken, later tied to the Armed Forces of National Liberation. Police swept the city as officials blamed a Communist faction.
Four families including a fire chief and his four children fled a blaze at 209-211 Maison Avenue just before 8 last night. The fire started in the cellar, spread to rafters and the upper floors, forcing evacuation of nine children and others as firefighters battled heavy smoke with oxygen masks. An investigation cited a faulty electrical extension cord as the likely cause.
Washington January 16 Kennedy plans a 99 billion federal budget for next year tied to tax cuts to spur growth. The plan aims to balance deficits while funding defense space and interest costs, with defense leading the outlay and space programs expanding as the nation seeks growth.
In Hartford on January 16 Rep Blanche Balstad Republican Monroe withdrew from the House Judiciary Committee and was replaced by Rep Benjamin L Barringer New Milford. Barringer is a former judge and served in the House in 1949 and 1947 and in the Senate in 1953 and 1947. Morano Greenwich step aside from the Incorporation Committee to Weicker Greenwich.
London report says Hugh Gaitskell’s condition worsened to grave as doctors seek more treatment within 24 hours. The Labour leader, hospitalized since October, shows infection affecting heart and lungs with kidneys and abdomen now involved. Continued coverage expected.
President Kennedy will visit Italy in 1963 with no confirmed date. Mrs Kennedy may or may not accompany him. The invitation came from Italian President Segni with Prime Minister De Gasperi’s office conveying approval.
A 72-year-old Salisbury woman, Mildred Fardy, died at the scene when her car left Route 44 in North Canaan and slammed into a tree. Dr. Robert Sellen ordered an autopsy after noting head injuries.
President Kennedy appointed a special three member panel led by Sen Wayne Morse to mediate the East and Gulf Coast dock strike. The board will meet with union and shipowners as negotiations falter. Kennedy warned public action may follow if private talks fail, noting vast economic disruption from halted port operations.
