Shenandoah Breaks From Moorings In 72 MPH Gale
The navy dirigible Shenandoah tore free from its mooring at Lakehurst New Jersey as a 72 mile per hour gale swept along the Atlantic coast. Officials held little hope at first but wireless messages indicated the ship was under control and riding out the storm. Landing was uncertain but a rescue and hangar crew stood by with searchlights. Captain Heinen and Commander Pierce led the operation.

A 70 mile gale and driving rain swept the Atlantic coast leaving four Fairfield County towns dark and causing heavy property damage. Lighting and store windows were smashed in Westport Norwalk Greenwich and Stratford while Bridgeport suffered significant losses. Small craft were wrecked at the harbor and ferryman Benjamin Tinkham was injured removing a sign board from Stratford avenue. A tug stands by the U S cruiser Tacoma after reports of the vessel aground on the Blanquilla Road about 16 miles from Vera Cruz. Heavy seas hinder approaching the Tacoma.
