Senate approves Underwood private operation bill for 50 year lease

The Senate backed the Underwood private leasing bill to run the government’s Tennessee River nitrate plant for up to 50 years with government operation until lease finalizes. The plan envisions 4 percent minimum annual returns on construction costs and nitrate production targets, with wartime authority to convert the plant for explosive production and six year fertilizer testing before Congress decides future policy.

Regular diplomas for night school planned by board

Night High school pupils will receive certificates similar to diplomas granted to day students. Mrs Fannie J Crosby urged a larger certificate. Superintendent B Everstr Cortright was asked to arrange. a conference with officials will be held next Wednesday to explore diplomas for students who attend night schools after leaving day school.

S-19 Crew Removed as Salvage Efforts Fail

The crew of the submarine S-19 was moved to coast guard cutters after salvage attempts failed to free the vessel from Orleans Harbor's outer bar in dense fog. Repeated tug and Coast Guard efforts at flood tide proved futile as the submarine remained deeply embedded in sand despite use of the Resolute and Wandank. High tide tomorrow may bring another chance to move the sunken craft.

McFadden Bill Passes House with Hull Amendments

The House approved the McFadden national banking bill with Hull amendments on branch banking by a standing vote. A later roll call backed 298 to 90 to reject recommittal efforts as amendments advanced, including Wingo’s to strike a bank crimes provision.

Met Opera Star Frances Alda to Broadcast Tonight

New York January 14 Frances Alda of the Metropolitan Opera Company will broadcast on radio tonight at 9 o clock from WEAF with seven stations relaying. The program aims to attract a large audience similar to the New Year night listenership for John McCormack and Lucretia Barton. Watertown resident McClean Buckingham was elected president of the State Federation of Farm Bureaus at its annual meeting in Hartford. J. W. Gasoline prices rise in East two cents today

New York January 14 gasoline prices in the East will be raised tomorrow by leading refining companies. Standard Oil of New York announced a two cent per gallon increase in New York and New England, with naphtha up one cent.
