Viet Cong forces strike again at an airfield driving a large assault on Thanh Phu peninsula. The immediate objective is to overwhelm 600 to 700 Communist troops and seize arms and supply depots.
Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield said North Vietnam premier Pham Van Dong’s remarks could be the sign the Johnson administration has sought indicating a willingness to negotiate peace in Vietnam. His optimism contrasts with U S assessments that the statements are propaganda to halt bombing.

Leonard J. Foster of 58 Petrie Street died at St. Vincent's hospital after a brief stay beginning December 13. He served in World War I and was a longtime Narvey Hubbell employee. Burial is planned at Mountain Grove cemetery after services at Mullins and Redgate Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife Mabel and five sons.
Robert J. H. Kiphuth led American teams at five Olympic Games and won 520 Yale dual meets. He coached Yale swimming from 1918 to 1959 and served as athletic director for 34 years. Memorial services are set in Battell Chapel. Memorials may go to Yale University Library fund.

Mrs Ruth Hartley Gale of 80 Oakview Circle wife of James E Gale vice president of Investors Mortgage Company died yesterday in St Vincent's hospital. Funeral services held at Long Hill funeral home Mullinsands Redgate Main Street and 10 o'clock at Church of the Assumption with a requiem Mass. Born in Anderson Indiana she had lived in Bridgeport 35 years. Survived by husband two sons James C Gale Bridgeport and David H Gale Cranston RI two daughters Mrs Harold Elsasser Pittsburgh Pa and Mrs Richard E Benson Fairfield a brother Charles Hartley Anderson four sisters Mrs Edward H Kemper Mrs Raymond Schimneller both Dayton Ohio Mrs Pauline Judd Anderson Ind and Mrs Josephine Kocher Bradenton Fla 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. John A. Dowd 80 longtime pastor of St John the Evangelist Church in New Britain died after joining Sunday services in the church rectory. He previously served parishes in Waterbury New Milford New Haven Rockville Hartford and Sharon. A Windsor Locks native ordained in 1914 in Montreal. Funeral services set for Wednesday.
A man sought by New York authorities on grand larceny charges was arrested last evening in town. William E Hairston, 26, of 228 Pine Street, allegedly stole a 1966 auto valued at $4,500. Hairston would be turned over to New York authorities today. He was taken into custody by Patrolmen Leonard Zargo and Lafayette White.

Burial to be announced in New Brunswick Canada. Grant was a machinist at Bridgeport Brass until retirement. He was a World War II veteran. Survived by a daughter Mrs Raymond Morris of Bridgeport eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Joseph Klinski of Portland, president of The New Britain Typographical Union, was elected president of the Connecticut Republican Labor League. He succeeds Jack A. Fusari Jr. of New Britain, who resigned to become registrar of voters. Wendell E. Coogan of Middletown, member of the Connecticut Federation of Teachers executive council, was chosen to succeed. Both men were previously officers in the league.
In Baghdad on army day, Shukairy blasted King Hussein as a Siegfried line between Jordan and Israel and said Hussein must meet Iraqi and Saudi troop entry requests. He forecast a popular revolution to topple Hussein, claimed Palestinian forces are training with Chinese communists, and said he spoke with North Vietnam’s ambassador in Cairo about Vietnam trained Palestinians in liberation warfare.
Police reported a $10,000 burglary at the Home of Realty Man with entries to a waiting vehicle. Jewelry, two televisions, liquor, and other items were taken from a safe. Other breaks include Aircraft Accessories Inc on Bay Street and several residences with door forced entries and missing cash and valuables.
Gustave H. Lidberg, 56, of Bear Hill Road, a longtime proofreader for Post Publishing and former Bridgeport Telegram staffer, died Sunday at his home. Survivors include wife Josephine Whidden Lidberg, two stepsons, a stepdaughter, mother, a brother in New York, and a sister in Barnstable. Services and burial planned in Massachusetts with local arrangements by Wilmot West and Gould Fairfield.
Bridgeport fire officials say firefighters rushed to a service station at Fairfield and Scofield avenues yesterday afternoon. The blaze started in a drain likely from gasoline and oil wastes igniting. damage described as very minor and apparatus recalled within five minutes.
Lt Cmdr Don Maunder described a crash at Andrews AFB near Washington with a crater ten feet deep and 30 feet wide and a 100 foot long crater. The four officers and five enlisted men aboard were killed in a disintegrating fire. Kenneth Hook and Karen Knick near Upper Marlboro reported a steep dive with engines at full throttle before impact. No bombs or missiles were aboard.
Harry Weide of 98 Washington Terrace reported to police that at 9 10 last night a man stepped from a passing car at Main Street and North Avenue and punched him in the mouth. Weide sustained severe lip injuries and required medical care. The other driver fled the scene and was being sought.
Business Press will honor Greenwich resident Thomas J. Watson Jr., chairman of IBM, with the 1966 Silver Quill award at the 16th annual Business Press dinner in Washington, D C on February 2. The award honors distinguished service to the nation with Watson cited for leadership in information handling systems and his civic contributions.
At Clarence and Kos suth streets last night about 8 30 o clock a two car crash damaged both vehicles. Addie B Dennis Jr 26 of 1078 Stratford avenue was charged with disregarding a stop sign and released on a summons pending Circuit Court hearing. His car ran the stop sign and hit Charles P Sullivan 33 of 463 Courtland Avenue.

Police at 3 a.m. Sunday arrested Bruce D. Buckingham, 35, of 143 Coleman Street, on a burglary with personal violence charge. He allegedly kicked in a door at Lena Micle’s apartment and beat her and her brother John Burns, 15, injuring both knees and tearing clothing. Buckingham, who fled, was caught soon after and held on $5,000 bail pending circuit court arraignment.
Fairfield police arrested David J. Harries, 58, of Milford, and Kenneth Rouse, 27, of Derby, at 11:20 p.m. outside the County Cinema on Kings Highway. Charged with breach of the peace and assault, each was released on $50 bonds and will face Circuit Court. Police said the dispute began when Harries objected to Rouse parking his car with the rear bumper against Harries’s vehicle.
Sophia Loren, 31, rushed to a Rome clinic on doctor orders to prevent miscarriage. Ponti, silent, visited her for three hours as the couple’s villa in Marino in the Alban Hills was the source of the emergency.
