War veteran denied readmission after Ellis Island test
Demetrius Robos, a twice wounded World War II veteran and former U S Army corporal who served in France, failed a literacy test at Ellis Island after refusing to read forty words in any language. He said he understood orders in the army and his case was appealed to the secretary of labor.
