Northern Pacific ship, stranded off the coast, is reportedly safe. Navy and Coast Guard communications indicate no danger. officers say troops aboard may be landed soon as rescue operations by air and sea continue.
A state street incident last night led to a man, about 45, being intoxicated and injured after pulling a fire alarm to intervene in a fight. Firemen responded, police locked him up after medical help, and witnesses described indignation at the alarm. Weather and almanac notes follow in the report.
The 1918 operating loss for the railroads under government control is estimated by railroad administration officials at under 250 million dollars. The deficit excludes large loans of 150 to 200 million dollars extended to railroads for improvements and new equipment. If Congress approves a five year extension of control, the government may recoup losses. otherwise return to private management is expected.
Theodore I. Shonts president of the Interborough Rapid Transit appeals to New York City for an eight-cent fare to avert bankruptcy amid a large deficit in subway and elevated earnings. He warns deficits will grow and shift burdens to future earnings before city shares. The note follows talk of a temporary receiver for Brooklyn Rapid Transit and signals a broader fare crisis affecting city transit finances.
New York Dairymen's league members refuse a wholesale price cut causing a Bridgeport milk shortage of over 3200 quarts this morning. Retailers seek a one cent per quart cut with producers, while other city dealers not affected. Farmers across eastern states unite in the larger strike affecting supply.
London dispatch reports 270 sailors drowned when the British steam yacht Tolaire struck near Stornoway Scotland during New Year holiday leave. The vessel carried 300 sailors. all officers and crew were lost, with only about 30 injured reaching shore.
Newport New Jersey reports that the decoy schooner Charles Whittemore, a four milled vessel, sailed as a naval decoy to lure German subs. Armed and manned by naval officers, she appeared a harmless cargo carrier but could fight at once if attacked. The submarine never halted her on voyage.
Ferdinand G. Fox of the Bridgeport Tax Payers' Association advocates Governor Holcomb appoint a legislative committee to probe Bridgeport city finances and real estate valuations. The 150-strong meeting condemns alleged legal breaches and a planned $400000 overspend for the year ending March 31, 1919, urging the legislature to block new debt or notes.
The Park Commission asks the Board of Aldermen to approve $2000 to plant and care for memorial trees in Bridgeport in memory of war dead. The full requisition totals $126,430 with items including $10,009 for Beachwood park development and $4000 for salt-water dust sprinkling in Seaside park next summer.
Mr and Mrs Leo Horne of Highland avenue are the proud parents of the first 1919 baby born in the city. The newborn girl arrived at Bridgeport Hospital early yesterday morning as the New Year ushered in. Both mother and child are reported doing nicely.

Bridgeport flyer Lieutenant Milton K. Lockwood of 1853 North Avenue earned the nickname luckiest man in the army after eleven near firing-line flights and three uninjured crashes. He was captured by Germans a week before armistice, escaped by disguising as a French priest, and later survived pneumonia and Spanish influenza in Paris Red Cross hospital. He plans to report for duty in Paris but prefers not to join the occupation forces. His mother, Mrs. W. W. Lockwood, waits for updates.
New York City remained bone dry on January 1 as saloons voluntarily closed after New Year’s Eve. Thousands of servicemen in town for holidays faced closed doors as cafes, hotels, and bars stayed shut, with liquor dealers’ actions aimed at preventing drunkenness and disorder.
William English of Railroad avenue lies in critical condition at St Vincent's hospital after an auto driven by Irred erick G Taylor struck him on Howard avenue near Railroad. English, a Stratford School Board member, was crossing Railroad when hit. Taylor reports the man was intoxicated and the car stopped within its length. passenger B C French of Milford was in the car.
Washington plans two fully staffed fleets based on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts by next summer with war games and joint maneuvers. Secretary Daniels told the House Naval Committee that a division of fleets will prevent retrograde drift after wars.
