A series of explosions and fires in Norfolk Virginia devastated two business blocks including the Monticello hotel. Three men were killed and many injured as police and naval authorities deem the fires incendiary. Loss estimated around 2.5 million dollars as fires burned in the ruins. The blaze was under control later that night.
Chilling north winds made Bridgeport among the coldest spots in New England, injuring two more people. Jenny Bingham of Josmo, and Patrick Sullivan from Fall River, were treated at the Emergency hospital for frostbite on ears, cheeks, and fingers after walking or working in the cold. Weather outlook notes snow and a warm-up by Thursday.
Washington Jan 1 Two men are dead and six severely burned after a four inch boiler tube explosion at the Philadelphia navy yard. A navy statement says the tube was likely defective. The two killed were Philadelphia residents and firemen. six injured also reside here. The power house suffered minor damage. In Fairmont West Virginia a separate blast at the Monongahela Powder Co plant killed one man outright and left others severely injured.
Italian forces strike in the Zenson loop on the Fiave river lower reaches driving the enemy to the eastern bank. A blaze razed the home of Derby recluse "Italian Joe" Grueck in Wells Hollow yesterday afternoon. The hermit escaped injury as furnishings and cherished possessions were destroyed. neighbors report Grueck lived a hermit life for years, and townsfolk vow to aid him after the disaster.
Bridgeport draft officials are urged to return delinquent information properly to the adjutant general. Police and sergeants raided a Greek restaurant at 847 Main Street owned by George Trovalas. Seven patrons and the proprietor were arrested on gambling charges. $3.86 in coins and a deck of cards were seized. Names of those arrested include Nicholas Caragas and Speros Diavapolis, with many others listed. the case will be moved to City Court.
Louis Silverberger aged 24 of 1026 Stratford Avenue and John Cheiidas aged 22 of LOR Broad Street were arrested at 12:80 this morning and booked at Police Headquarters on breach of the peace and aid to investigation charges. Detectives Wheeler Malone Derrick and Seery detained them after a day-long effort to locate six highwaymen who robbed the Friedman Lakatos restaurant at 341 Vine Street and attempted a cashier hold-up New Year's morning. Both men reportedly contributed to the escapade as alleged participants.
