Boston Feb 25 AP Settlement of a contract dispute that threatened a strike by 10 000 New England employees of First National stores was announced by Federal Mediation Service Commissioner John J Sullivan after a 25 hour meeting. The vote was 4000 to 1600 to accept the contract with higher wages longer vacations and stronger seniority. The 30 month deal adds wage increases to hours retroactive to Feb 10 and 10 cents additional May 10 1963. Vacations rise to two weeks after one year service. First National says the package will cost about 4 million over three years. The strike threat affected stores in all New England states except Vermont. Local 871 Connecticut members voted to accept the contract in Hartford. The Local represents 1000 First National workers in the state.
About 249 employees at the Winchester plant of the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation voted to accept furloughs rather than permanent layoffs as a government ammunition contract nears completion. The option aims for a six to eight week pause, tied to contract timing and a pending Army order.
Burglars entered three homes over the weekend, taking cash and items. Toscal Gallo of 1595 Madison Avenue reported $430 in cash and a 35 caliber pistol missing after a broken window and side door entry. Police say a man was wounded in a shooting that broke a restaurant window and sent patrons fleeing into the street. The exchange occurred after Mr Jones approached a booth where Mr Cunningham sat with his wife Mrs Conte. Jones reportedly spoke to Mrs Cunningham before following Cunningham outside, then returned inside and fired. Two brothers rushed Jones to hospital in a private car as officers retrieved a .25 caliber weapon and four spent cartridges.
