Conference committees smoothed differences in the Fordney emergency tariff bill and sent it back to the House. A two cent per pound sugar tariff was affirmed for ordinary sugar with a higher Senate rate slashed. Tobacco duties were cut by 50 cents per pound, and the Senate cherry rate was reduced from four to three cents.
Washington reports Henry P. Fletcher will be given wide latitude in Latin American affairs as undersecretary of staff while Secretary Hughes focuses on European problems. The plan, believed approved by President-elect Harding, implies a de facto second secretary of state, though Hughes maintains overall policy control.
In Sandwich Ontario Rev. J. O. J. Spracklin a former liquor license inspector was acquitted of manslaughter in the shooting of innkeeper Reverly Tromble during a raid last November. The verdict came fifty five minutes after the case was given to the jury.
London reports via the Evening Star that widow Mrs Terence MacSwiney is engaged to Art O'Brien, vice president of the Irish Self Determination league and head of its London branch. MacSwiney died in Brixton prison on October 24 after a 73 day hunger strike, with O'Brien supplying near hourly bulletins during his confinement.
Chief Police Inspector William J Tahey is indicted for accepting a $59 improper fee linked to the recovery of a burned automobile in a Whitman era graft probe. OConnell is named as another official. Lahey was suspended after the indictment and disputed the charges stating he acted within routine duties.
New York on February 24 John T Hettrick a lawyer and reputed author of the Code of Practice used by master plumbers and other building trades contractors was found guilty in the Court of General Sessions of conspiracy and coercion and sentenced to the state penitentiary The sentence ranges from six months to three years The indictment followed a probe by the Lockwood Legislative committee into stifling and bid rigging in building contracts Other defendants including Hobert P Brindel William L Doren William H Chapman and Herbert Smith were also found guilty of extortion or related charges and received similar sentences They were sent to the Tombs for seven days for possible appeals or further action
Chicago Feb 4. An internal revenue agent says scores of prominent citizens including business men, merchants and politicians are implicated in a nationwide booze smuggling syndicate dating back to Prohibition. He cites forged permits and forged signatures as methods, and expects warrants and arrests within a week or two as investigations extend from Chicago to New York and Louisville.
In London on February 24, Ben Knott a wealthy Northern Transvaal farmer arrived at Dr Clarence Andrew Pietersburgs clinic dragging a baboon on a chain insisting the doctor perform a Voronof gland operation to restore vitality. The doctor shot the animal and carried out the operation. a vamogram from ophthalmology indicates Knott now feels youthful again and his failing sight is improved.
New York City Comptroller Charles A. Graig was jailed for sixty days by Judge Julius M. Mayer after being found in contempt for statements in a October letter to Lewis Nixon. A writ of habeas corpus granted parole until next Tuesday. Graig must file a retraction when the writ is heard. His counsel, Edmund L. Mooney, argued against the contempt ruling.

Four Bridgeport men pleaded guilty in U S District Court New Haven to Volstead act violations and were fined. Bales Suchsk fined 100 dollars plus costs for operating a still. Michael Ku wack 100 dollars. Joseph Marjesky 209 dollars. Abe Carterin 50 dollars. Court day disposed of 28 liquor cases with guilty pleas. fines totaling 188 dollars listed on the docket for February term.
Judge Maltbie of the superior court ruled in the Hat Shop case that United Hatters officers did not violate an injunction. The R and W Hat Shop, once union, had withdrawn and sought non union bodies to provide work. The court found the union actions aligned with organizing goals and no floral act occurred. Judgment for the defendants.
William Bassett vice president of Phoenix National Bank and president of the police commissioners' board died by his own hand after private life rumors and a demanded resignation. The bank stated there was no shortage in accounts. His death caused a statewide sensation and prompted ongoing police and civic inquiries.

Police detained three teens after a snowball fight in a city park led to injuries. Joseph Hell 18, boxer of 255 Lewis Street. Lester Gregory 18, of 440 Mali Street. and Frank Bayette 15, of 670 Howard Avenue were held for a court re arraignment.
