Government Right To Surtax Hinges On New Decision
Treasury officials said the government’s right to collect millions in surtaxes in seven states depends on an attorney general ruling about dividing property between husband and wife for income tax under community laws. If property acquired after marriage is shared, joint returns would tax total income. dividing income would reduce the surtax. An earlier attorney general opinion suggested income division is permissible under Texas community laws.

Entertainment at Harris Post Last Night in Lyric Hall
Ex soldiers and friends were entertained by the Ladies auxiliary of the Raymond W. Harris Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lyric hall. More than 260 attended with vocal and instrumental performances and dancing after refreshments. James Haggerty of the Boston Post gave a brief address. A business session preceded the event. The post has secured pew quarters at 181 Washington avenue and plans to move soon. The auxiliary will meet Thursday night.
