A harsh cold snap grips the region with a high near 30 and a low of 2 degrees yesterday. The prior low was 4 degrees on January 23. Winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 35 made the chill feel harsher. Partly cloudy, breezy and cold today with highs in the 20s and lows near 10 tonight.
In Wellington Hubert H. Humphrey denounced Senator Robert F. Kennedy's proposal for a coalition government in South Vietnam that would include both communist and anti communist elements calling it putting a fox in a chicken coop. He warned the plan would fail to stabilize the country.
A deep February freeze gripped much of the nation from Montana to New Jersey. Record lows were set or tied in International Falls Roseau Albany and Syracuse with readings from 43 below in Minnesota to 32 below in upstate New York. Weather forecasts warned the cold would persist into Monday as areas reported subzero temperatures across multiple states.
A 26 year old Bridgeport man, Joseph R. Andrasko, was killed when he fell 40 feet from a pine tree while climbing for firewood at Pope's pond off Nod Mill road. Police said he died of a skull fracture after being taken to Norwalk Hospital. He was ice fishing with relatives including brothers Paul and Daniel and uncle Peter Luztaky.
Iowa national guardsmen rushed to aid patrols along levees in Davenport as the Mississippi rose behind an eight mile ice jam. About 150 families evacuated with more families already warned to leave as flood stage neared 18 feet.
