A harsh cold snap grips the region with a high near 30 and a low of 2 degrees yesterday. The prior low was 4 degrees on January 23. Winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 35 made the chill feel harsher. Partly cloudy, breezy and cold today with highs in the 20s and lows near 10 tonight.

A deep February freeze gripped much of the nation from Montana to New Jersey. Record lows were set or tied in International Falls Roseau Albany and Syracuse with readings from 43 below in Minnesota to 32 below in upstate New York. Ice angler dies after tree fall while wood gathering

A 26 year old Bridgeport man, Joseph R. Andrasko, was killed when he fell 40 feet from a pine tree while climbing for firewood at Pope's pond off Nod Mill road. Police said he died of a skull fracture after being taken to Norwalk Hospital. He was ice fishing with relatives including brothers Paul and Daniel and uncle Peter Luztaky.

Adm Nimitz Dies at 80 in California Home

Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, who led naval forces to drive Japan from the Pacific in World War II, died at 80 at his Yerba Buena Island home after a stroke.
